Equine-Assisted Learning: A Proven Intervention for School and SEND Support

Introduction

Equine-Assisted Learning (EAL) is an evidence-informed, experiential intervention that combines structured activities with horses and reflective facilitation to support emotional, behavioural, and educational outcomes. It is increasingly recognised in educational and therapeutic settings as an effective provision for students with Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (SEMH) needs, as well as those with SEND profiles such as Autism, ADHD, and Sensory Processing Differences.

Why EAL Works in School Settings

EAL addresses gaps in conventional educational provision by creating opportunities for students to build skills in: emotional regulation, communication, self-esteem, and self-awareness. The natural, non-judgemental environment provided by horses offers a unique platform for children to succeed outside of the classroom, reducing behavioural incidents and increasing overall engagement.

Relevance for SEND Provision

EAL is particularly suited to students with additional needs. Horses provide instant feedback on non-verbal cues, promoting body awareness, consistency, and emotional congruence. For neurodivergent learners who may struggle with traditional settings, EAL offers low-pressure, sensory-friendly experiences that support processing and trust-building.

💬 Why Horses?

Horses are incredibly sensitive to non-verbal communication and emotional states.

They offer honest feedback without judgement, creating a safe, validating environment for students who may struggle with conventional learning or therapy formats.

📘 Case Study Example

Student: 12-year-old with ASC and sensory processing differences

Intervention: 10 weeks of weekly 1:1 EAL sessions

Outcome:

  • Improved tolerance to transitions

  • Reduced sensory shutdowns

  • Increased confidence handling animals and people

  • Improved school attendance and group participation

Equine-Assisted Learning (EAL) is a highly adaptable intervention that supports neurodiverse learners and those with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs.

Through structured, non-ridden activities with horses, EAL offers students the opportunity to build life skills, confidence, and emotional regulation in a calm, sensory-friendly environment.

  • 🗣️ Non-verbal and sensory-rich interactions support students with Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC)

  • 🔄 Predictable routines and a low-stimulus setting reduce anxiety and encourage self-regulation

  • 💬 Real-time emotional feedback from horses builds awareness, empathy, and connection

  • 🧩 Ground-based tasks develop executive function, memory, and communication

  • 🌱 Clear boundaries and calm interactions help foster positive behaviour
